Fireworks experts had to use precision timing throughout one of Queensland's biggest fireworks displays last night.

About 500,000 people packed viewing areas along the Brisbane River to see a display that was extended to cater for a bigger audience.

Festival director Jonathan Parsons says all six barges had to stick to a strict schedule during the 35-minute display.

"There was precision timing because we had to have the F-111s timed to the second to make sure they were in synch with the fireworks," he said.

"The last thing you want is them coming through one of the fireworks shells.

"We had six barges this year whereas in previous years we had four."
