Setting up BigPond Satellite broadband internetCOVERAGE THROUGHOUT AUSTRALIA*

Setting up

BigPond® Satellite Broadband must be professionally installed. Once your application has been processed, BigPond will contact you to arrange a convenient time for installation to take place.

Setting up satellite in your home

BigPond Satellite Broadband requires the installation of a satellite dish, cabling and a standard single-ethernet port (HN7000S) modem.

A BigPond technician will install a 74cm, 98cm or 120cm satellite dish on your roof if your installation is standard, or on a pole if your installation is deemed to be complex. If a 180cm satellite dish is required, the technician will mount the dish on a pole and connect it to your standard modem.

Once the satellite modem software is installed, your service should be working before the technician leaves the premises.

Please note: If you are in a rented premises, or one governed by a body corporate, you will need written approval from your landlord or the body corporate before your satellite equipment can be installed. You should also check with your local council, in case you need to submit a Development Application to install a satellite dish.

The prices above are for a standard installation, which is classified as a standard roof or wall mount.

Additional Charges:

  • The total cost for a remote standard service does not include travel, which is charged at $1.10/km from the designated Telstra base to the customer's premises and back.
  • If a 120cm or 180cm dish is required, the customer will incur a $150 dish surcharge.
  • If you require a pole mount either by request or to meet Telstra's Wind Ratings, an additional charge of $550 will apply for Telstra to install the pole. Alternatively, the additional charge will be $220, for Telstra to supply the pole for a self-installation prior to Telstra dispatching a technician to install the satellite equipment.
  • If you request a site survey, or if on the day of installation any information that was provided in the customer's prequalification is shown to be incorrect (for example, no clear line of sight), you will be charged $110 for the site visit fee. In these cases, the technician will carry out a site survey to determine what exactly is required (i.e. additional equipment and labour) to complete the installation. This site survey document is signed by you on the day, and sent to our Telstra Contracts Officer for approval. Once approved, the customer will be provided with a summary of the additional charges for their non-standard installation. Once approved, we will proceed with the installation.

Networking

It's easy to connect your BigPond Satellite Broadband to a server or LAN so you can access the internet from a number of computers. This works for both Windows and Macintosh as well as Linux operating systems.

Please note: BigPond technical support only extends to the first connected computer.

New satellite members who choose the standard single-port (HN7000S) modem option can network computers by simply buying a router.

Existing members on satellite plans can purchase the Ursys Busibox Ethernet Gateway Device, which provides broadband routing, firewall and all the applications you need to manage and control an internet domain.

Also, existing satellite members using the DW4000 modem have the option of upgrading to the network-ready 4 Port Ethernet Gateway unit (DW4020) for a $900 surcharge, or the HN7000S modem for $1200. The DW4020 lets you network up to four computers and Ethernet printers.
