A clean-up has started of a toxic seaweed at the North Haven marina in Adelaide.

Caulerpa taxifolia was found near the boat ramp last week, prompting urgent action to stop it from spreading.

Divers expect to spend several weeks vacuuming the weed from the sea floor.

The invasive seaweed was eradicated from West Lakes several years ago by pumping in fresh water, but the weed has also been found in the Port River, where it has become well established despite efforts to fight it.

It is thought that small boats have dragged the weed from the river into North Haven's marina.
